Kazan Travel Guide

Kazan Overview

Kazan is the capital of the exotically named “Republic of Tatarstan” and is a wealthy city that successfully manages to blend both Muslim and Christian culture. In fact even its Kremlin has both Orthodox Cathedrals and a Mosque. The city itself is well developed and attractive yet is sadly overlooked on many itineraries despite being said to be the “Third Capital of Russia.” As one might expect with this religious blend the city has a colourful past and to all extents a good future.

For anyone who has the time we would recommend a stop in Kazan as it offers something quite different to other, smaller Russian cities with its strong Tatar influences.

Top Sights in Kazan

The Kremlin – This large Tartar fortress is a real highlight of Kazan and is different to many other Kremlins not least for containing a mosque as well as the usual Orthodox churches.

Kul Sharif Mosque – Completed only in 2005 to symbolise the harmony in multicultural Tartarstan it is built in the Turkish style and includes a museum in the basement.

Annunciation Cathedral and the Suyumbike Tower both are of architectural interest and within the Kremlin’s walls.

State Museum of the Tartar State – Completed in time for the 1,000 year anniversary of the city in 2005 it is best visited with a guide.

Bauman Street – The main street from the Kremlin and full of interest – described as Kazan’s Arbat – and a pleasant place to wander.
