Vladivostok Travel Guide

Vladivostok Overview

Vladivostok is the almost legendary end (or beginning) of the true Trans-Siberian line. For years this city was closed to foreigners as it is the home base of the Russian Pacific Fleet. It has a fantastic location on the Amursky Gulf and an air of prosperity that you may not have noticed much since you left Moscow. The city is considerably further East than Beijing, in fact closer to Japan, and is looking good following extensive renovation work on its ornate boulevards completed for the 2012 APEC summit.

Best Reason to Visit Vladivostok

For those wanting to complete the true Trans-Siberian the full trip between Moscow and Vladivostok is a must although it is often overlooked in favour of the Trans-Mongolian to Beijing.

Top Sights in Vladivostok

Ploschad Bortsov Revolutsy – Vladivostok’s main square and a good place to people watch. Dominated by two large statues dedicated to the soldiers who fought in Russia’s far east.

The Harbour – The city has a beautiful setting in Golden Horn Bay made all the more interesting by part of Russia’s Pacific Fleet being moored along the water front.

Train Station – A beautiful building similar in looks to Moscow’s Yaroslav Station a mere 9,288km to the east. In front of the station is a Lenin Statue.

Vladivostok Fortress – Built to repel Japan but deemed no longer necessary you can wander around this abandoned fort.

C-56 Submarine – Located by the Naval memorial this is likely to be your only chance to get inside a Russian Sub!

Top Vladivostok Travel Tip from TSTC

Vladivostok is best reached from Beijing (by air although train is also possible) or Japan by ferry or air links. It is well worth a few days either to get your legs back after the long trip from Moscow or to acclimatize to Russia before heading west.

TSTC's Hand Picked Hotels in Vladivostok

For along time the Hyundai Hotel has been considered the best option in the city but it is a little too far from the centre for our liking. More centrally located options are the Primorye Hotel and Hotel Versailles but it is safe to say that hotel accommodation is not really the reason for visiting Vladivostok!
