The Gobi Desert is one of the highlights of Mongolia and there is more to it than just the enormous dunes at Khongor. The scenery is varied and beautiful with many unusual landscapes and a wide variety of wildlife as well.

This tour covers the classic Gobi sights that can’t be seen form our train-based East Gobi trips including the Dunes, National Parks and a wide range of scenery and, if lucky, wildlife.

Day 1 - Arrival Ulaanbaatar

City Tour of Ulaanbaatar & a Night in Mongolia’s Capital

Arrival in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia and a truly unique destination that is for many a real highlight of the trip. Transfer to your hotel for breakfast before beginning a city tour. Note that check-in time is noon but if a room is available you can check-in and freshen up.

Mongolia’s capital is home to around a third of the entire population and has experienced a major boom in the last 10 years. There is much of cultural interest here and the tour includes Gandan Lama Monastery, impressive Sukhbaatar square and the views and Soviet monuments of Zaisan Hill.

Free time for the rest of the day, perhaps to delve into the city’s surprisingly vibrant eating and drinking scene.

Meals Included: None today.

Day 2 - Ulaanbaatar to South Gobi

Fly to South Gobi & Visit the Beautiful Gurvan Saikhan Mountains National Park

Today take a domestic flight to a beautiful and remote region of the South Gobi, 553 km from Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to the Goviin Bayanburd 1 ger camp before a visit to the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains National Park. Here, rather than desert, the higher elevations up to 2,600 meters contain areas of steppe. This provides a habitat for a number of rare plants and animals including the elusive snow leopard and the Gobi Camel.

There are also areas of sand dunes, most famously the Khongoryn Els – the Singing Sands – which get their name due to the eery noises emanating from the dunes in the wind. Return to the camp to overnight under the desert sky.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 3 - South Gobi

Visit the Saxaul Forest, Flaming Cliffs & a Camel Breeding Family

Today we use a jeep traveling 120 km exploring the Gobi visiting the unique Saxaul forests that survive this harsh desert environment of hot summers and frozen winters. Drive on to see the beautiful flaming cliffs which is also an area famous for dinosaur skeletons. We round off the day by visiting a local camel breeding family to learn how they live in this beautiful but harsh area. There may be an opportunity to ride camels here before we finish at the Goviin Bayanburd 2 ger camp to overnight.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 4 - South Gobi

Visit the High Dunes of Hongoryn Els & the Beautiful Desert Scenery

Travel on by jeep to Duut Mankhan, 200 km to the west, to see what are literally called the “big sandy mountains” of Hongoryn Els. Here the dunes are up to 180 km long with the name of “Duut manhan” because the sound of the wind is similar to that of an aeroplane. The dunes reach to 80m in height and have been sculted into their elegant shapes by the winds of many years. In stark contrast to dunes is the nearby Hongor River creating areas of greenery that look surreal in this desert environment.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 5 - South Gobi

Drive Back Through the South Gobi to Goviin Bayanburg 1 Camp

A relaxed day driving back to the Goviin Bayaburd-1 ger camp, where the first night was spent. There is plenty of opportunity to stop along the way for photos and short walks if you wish.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 6 - South Gobi to Ulaanbaatar

Flight Back to Ulaanbaatar With Free Time to Relax on Arrival

Today you return to Ulaanbaatar by plane. Transfer to the hotel on arrival with free time in the city for any souvenir shopping before an evening folk performance to round off your time in Mongolia. Return to the hotel to overnight.

Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 7 - Depart Ulaanbaatar

Free Time to Explore the City Before Departure

A free day in Ulaanbaatar to further explore the city, shop for souvenirs, visit some of the museums or catch up on coffee and correspondence before a transfer to your onward transport.

Meals Included: Hotel Breakfast.
