Day 2 - Lake Baikal

A Day Exploring the Lake Shore Village of Bolshoe Goloustnoe & Surrounds

There is no rush to wake this morning. Enjoy a hearty breakfast before heading off for a walk up a nearby mountain ascending 400 meters for panoramic views of Baikal (if this is too strenuous or the weather is bad your guide will make other suggestions). A leisurely return to the house for lunch. Free time in the afternoon to relax back at the house or further explore the village and surrounding forest and hills or enjoy another invigorating Banya (note not if staying at the Yasnaya though).

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner at the Guest House.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THIS LAKE BAIKAL STOPOVER

Bolshoe Goloustnoe is a small village on the shores of Baikal and provides a genuine Siberian experience in beautiful surroundings. The village is far enough from the Irkutsk to keep day trippers to a minimum and has retained it charm. However, this does mean accommodation is in the traditional Siberian style of log cabins, separate, outside buildings for drop (not flush) toilets and a Russian banya (sauna) for washing. For many this is all part of the experience and feedback is overwhelmingly positive. If you would prefer more comfort we can arrange a higher level guesthouse in Bolshoe Goloustnoe or a different stopover in the more built up village of Listvyanka.

Day 3 - Lake Baikal to Irkutsk

Return to Irkutsk With a City Tour and Free Time to Relax at Your Hotel

After breakfast drive the 2 hours back to Irkutsk arriving late morning at your hotel. Once settled in you will have a 2 hour walking tour of the city centre including the park and War Memorial, some of the beautiful churches along the Angara river, the main city centre streets and the statue of Alexander III – the Tzar responsible for the Trans-Siberian railway. Return to your hotel with free time for the rest of the day.

Meals Included: Breakfast at the Guest House.

Accommodation Option in Irkutsk & Bolshoe Goloustnoe

Day 1 - Arrive Irkutsk & Lake Baikal

Arrival in Irkutsk Transferring to Listvyanka Village on the Shores of Baikal

Arrival in Irkutsk, regarded as the modern day cultural capital of Siberia, famed for its traditional wooden architecture, complimented by a vibrant cafe and restaurant culture. Transfer from the station the 1 hour drive following the route of the Angara River down to the village of Listvyanka located close to where the river meets beautiful Lake Baikal. The lake is among the deepest in the world at 1,642 meters and has exceptionally clear water. Breakfast and time to settle in to your accommodation before your guide will take you on a 4 hour walking tour including the beautiful church and Limnological Museum to learn about the Lake itself and its unique flora and fauna. We also take chairlift up to a view point for some of the best lake vistas. If time we can also visit the local fish market before a free evening.

Meals Included: Hotel Breakfast.

Day 2 - Lake Baikal

Choose to Take a Day Hike or Visit Port Baikal & See the Circum-baikal Railway

Today you will have two choices – note we will need to know which you choose at the time of booking.

OPTION 1:

A day of trekking with a specialist trekking guide to walk in the forest and hills surrounding Listvyanka. You will have a picnic lunch in a peaceful spot and visit several good viewpoints. Please note that this will be a day of fairly strenuous walking and you will need reasonable walking boots, a day pack and it is advisable to have a waterproof jacket in case of rain. The trekking guide speaks only a little English.

OPTION 2:

From Listvyanka wharf take a short, 10 minute, ferry ride with your guide to nearby Port Baikal. From here walk about 40 minutes along the old Circum-Baikal rail track to where we stop for a picnic lunch with plenty of time to relax and take in the scenery before catching the ferry back to Listvyanka.

Free time in the evening to relax after today’s exertions. We recommend arranging a Banya (Russian Sauna) in the village as the best way to achieve this!

Meals Included: Hotel Breakfast & Picnic Lunch.

Circum-Baikal Day Tour

Ride the Train Route as a Day Tour Along the Circum-Baikal Railway

This day tour can either be started from Port Baikal (near to Listvyanka) or from Irkutsk. Start days vary so please ask us for more details.

Board a special tourist train that runs the Circum-Baikal route from Irkutsk to Port Baikal. The route allows you to see the beautiful scenery of the Southern Baikal shore line and makes plenty of leisurely and informative stops where you can explore the bridges and tunnels the railway is famed for. This trip is a group tour so you will not have your own private guide unless you specifically request us to include that. Lunch is served on the train. At the end of the day we will meet you off the train to take you to your accommodation.

Day 1 - Arrive Irkutsk & Lake Baikal

Arrival in Irkutsk Transferring to Bolshoe Goloustnoe on the Shores of Baikal

Arrival in Irkutsk, regarded as the modern day cultural capital of Siberia, famed for its traditional wooden architecture, complimented by a vibrant cafe and restaurant culture.

Transfer from the station stopping for a buffet breakfast in the city before a 2 hour drive through dense forest to the remote village of Bolshoe Goloustnoe located inside Pribaikalsky National Park. The setting is quintessential Siberia with almost all the village’s houses made of wood running up to the lakeshore of beautiful Baikal, among the deepest in the world at 1,642 meters. Many of the 700 residents have lived their entire lives in the village which dates back to 1673.

Your accommodation here is in a Siberian house in the heart of the village. Once settled in take a walk with your guide through the village including a visit to the church. We walk along the lakeshore and can also climb into the forests and hills for views of Lake Baikal (good shoes or walking boots advisable). Return to the house for a pre-dinner Banya – the traditional Russian Sauna. Your guide will explain the procedure and after a hearty Siberian homestyle meal should set you up for a great nights sleep!

Meals Included: Hotel Breakfast – Lunch & Dinner at the Guest House.

Day 2 - Trekking from Bolshoe Goloustnoe

Start the Trek From Bolshoe Goloustnoe Following the Shore of Lake Baikal

After a good breakfast start the trek with a local guide (note that they may not speak much English) trekking 23km (about 6-7 hours) through the beautiful lakeshore and forest scenery. Stop for a picnic lunch in a secluded part of the forest and take in the beautiful nature of the remote part of the world. Continue walking in the afternoon until reaching wooden trekking huts to overnight.

Meals Included: Breakfast at the Guest House, Picnics for Lunch & Dinner.

NOTES ABOUT THIS LAKE BAIKAL TREK

The trekking is of a moderate standard so you need to be in reasonable fitness to take this option. You should bring good walking shoes and warm and waterproof clothing as lake shore weather can be unpredictable. Each person is expected to carry in their own backpack what they need for the trek as well as their share of provisions. The guide is not your porter! Luggage not needed for the trek can be left in Irkutsk.

Day 3 - Bolshie Koty to Irkutsk

Continue Trekking to Bolshie Koty to Catch a Hydrofoil to Listvyanka & Irkutsk

Continue trekking to Bolshie Koty which is 17 km and takes 4-5 hours. From here you will catch the 6pm Hydrofoil to Listvyanka and onto Irkutsk with the total journey time being around 90 minutes. Evening arrival in Irkutsk with a transfer to your hotel with free time for the rest of the evening.

Note that the Hydrofoil doesn’t run on Monday and Thursdays in June and September and there is always a chance it will be cancelled without notice due to poor weather on the lake. In this case the trekking may need to be adapted which your guide will discuss with you at the time.

Meals Included: Breakfast & Lunch whilst trekking.

Day 4 - Depart Irkutsk
