Day 1 - Arrival Beijing

You will be welcomed at the airport or train station and transferred to your comfortable hotel. Time to settle in before a tour of some of Beijing’s highlights including the beautiful Temple of Heaven and famous Tiananmen Square. Round off your first day with a welcome dinner.

Day 2 - Beijing

Today we head out of the city to the mountains that contain the Great Wall. We also visit the Ming Tombs and the avenue of the spirits. Return to the city for the quintessential evening meal of Peking Duck!

Day 3 - Depart Beijing

Today you will be visiting the extraordinary former home of the Emperors of China, the Forbidden City, a vast complex of buildings right in the city centre. Late in the day your epic rail adventure begins as we depart Beijing for Mongolia.

*IMPORTANT* Up to the Chinese border we have to use a modern Chinese train as the Chinese have a different track gauge to Russia and Mongolia. Once over the border we change trains to our Tsars Gold. Note that the Chinese train has no Nostalgic Comfort and Bolshoi cabins – only two or 4 bed cabins. Single occupancy is not guaranteed.

Day 4 - Through the Gobi Desert

The journey though China this morning gives a unique insight into the rural life of China. At noon we reach the border where we exit China and take a bus to join the Tsars Gold train, your home until Moscow. On the Mongolia side formalities are attended to on the train. The journey continues, first through the barren Gobi desert before reaching the grasslands and open Steppe.

Day 5 - Arrival Ulaanbaatar

We arrive this morning in Mongolia’s capital of Ulaanbaatar. We visit the impressive Buddhist monastery of Gandan and the Lama Museum. Optional Mongolia folk concert (tickets to be bought and paid for locally) before spending the night in a centrally located hotel. If you prefer we can book in advance to stay in a traditional Mongolian ger (must be booked in advance and please contact us for details).

Day 6 - Mongolian Countryside

Today we visit the open steppe, mountains and grasslands outside of Ulaanbaatar. We visit a typical ger camp, home to the nomadic herdsmen that are still very much part of Mongolian culture. The herdsmen will give a display of their horseback skills. You will also have a chance to try the in famous “Fermented Mare’s Milk” – the beer of the nomads!

Day 7 - Ulan Ude

We continue by train today heading through the grasslands to the Russian border. On through we stop at Ulan Ude, capital of Buryatia and a city where Western and Eastern cultures meet.

Day 8 - Lake Baikal

Today is dedicated to Lake Baikal. Late morning we arrive at Port Baikal right on the shore of this stunning and vast lake. a tour by bus out of Irkutsk to a Siberian village on the shore of Lake Baikal. From here we travel the old route of the Trans-Siberian along the shores of Baikal for several hours with a couple of stops to take photos. There will also be a boat ride on the lake and even the chance to go for a swim! Dinner is served in typical local style as a picnic on the shores of the lake (weather permitting).

Day 9 - Irkutsk

Check in to a hotel in the city of Irkutsk (the bulk of your luggage can be left on the train if you wish), once described as the “Paris of Siberia” and you will see evidence of that on our city tour seeing some of the beautiful wooden architecture and impressive river front’s statue of Alexander III. We also visit the lively market. After lunch the tour continues with a visit to the open-air museum “Life and Work in the Time of the Tsars”. Tonight is spent in a centrally located hotel in Irkutsk.

Day 10 - Across Siberia

A full day on the train through Siberia. The landscape is of pristine rivers, endless birch and pine forest and distant mountains. On the train there will be lectures about this fascinating and remote land. There will also be a special meal today we call the “Tsar’s Feast” and enjoy Russian hospitality with vodka and caviar tasting.

Day 11 - Novosibirsk

By noon we reach the city of Novosibirsk in the heart of Siberia where you will be welcomed in the traditional Russian manner with bread and salt. We visit a monument to the Trans-Siberian and see the mighty Ob River. After dinner the train continues it’s journey Westwards.

Day 12 - Ekaterinburg

In the afternoon we arrive at Ekaterinburg. Much of this prosperous city was renovated in 2009 and our tour will visit the newly built Cathedral-on-the-blood, built in memorial to the tragic historical event of the nuder of the Tsars and his family. On departing Ekaterinburg we leave Asia and enter Europe.

Day 13 - Kazan

After breakfast we arrive in Kazan, capital of Tatarstan province on the banks of the mighty Volga river. The city is full of history and the tour here will bring to life the once turbulent relationship between Tartars, Cossacks, and Russians. Return to your train for a final dinner on the train before tomorrow’s arrival in Moscow.

Day 14 - Arrival Moscow

A final morning on the train before arriving at Moscow, Russia’s iconic capital. Transfer to your comfortable hotel before taking a tour to the most famous of Moscow sights, the imposing Kremlin complex and one of its magnificent cathedrals dating back to the time of the Tsars. After dinner a fabulous “Moscow by Night” city lights tour seeing some of the most iconic building lit in all their glory. After you have time to stroll through the famous Red Square with your guide and will experience the splendour of Moscow’s unique metro stations, as much art museums as public transport.

Day 15 - Depart Moscow

After a breakfast at your hotel a final tour of Moscow to see the reconstructed Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Lomonossov University, New Virgin Monastery, and Red Square with its colourful St. Basil’s Cathedral. We will also see the notorious former KGB headquarters. After the tour a fond farewell and a transfer to the airport for you flight home.

The minimum number of participants required for a trip to run is 120.

We regret that due to the intricate logistics of this tour, itinerary changes are sometimes unavoidable.

On booking a non-refundable deposit of 20% of the total tour price plus any international flights we are booking for you. Full payment is required 90 days before the trip start date.

International flights, tips, beverages, visa fees and any services not mentioned are not included in the price.

Tsars Gold Cancellation conditions:

  • Up to 90 days prior to departure: 20 % of total price
  • Up to 42 days prior to departure: 50% of total price
  • Up to 1 day prior to departure: 90% of total price

Any part of the program that is missed because of late arrival is non-refundable.

Tsars Gold China Pre-Tour Itinerary

You have made it all the way to China to join the Tsars Gold so we would highly recommend seeing more of this fascinating destination if you have the time. Below is our recommended option but we can tailor this China section for you as well as it is run as a private tour rather than a group option. We can also offer more extensive trips in China some of which can be seen by clicking here. It can be added in to any of the Tsars Gold trips that start in Beijing.

Day 1 - Arrival Shanghai

Arrival in China’s buzzing and increasingly futuristic financial capital of Shanghai. Transfer to your hotel to check-in. Time to relax before a visit to the world famous Chinese Acrobats for a show filled with excitement. Transfer back to your hotel to overnight.

Day 2 - Shanghai to Xian

After breakfast start a full day private tour of this city’s highlights including the Yuyuan Garden, Fuyou Road Antique Market and Old Shanghai, The Bund, Huangpu River and  a trip up one of Pudong’s Sky Scrapers for a bird’s eye view of the city from the top of one of the stunning skyscrapers that now dominate the skyline. After the tour a flight on to Xian, China’s Tang Dynasty Capital and start of the ancient silk road. Transfer to your hotel to overnight.

Day 3 - Xian

Full day private tour of Xian’s highlights starting with the extraordinary ranks of the Terra Cotta Army. Created by China’s first Emperor Qin Shi Huang, work began in 246 BC and at its height it is said that 700,000 people worked on the project. In the afternoon we visit a relic of the Tang Dynasty, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built in 652 AD. Continue on to Xian’s largest construction, the 13.7 km City Walls which are up to 18 meters thick at the base and 12 meters in height. Finish the day with a wander through Xian’s vibrant Muslim quarter, an exotic reminder of the cities trading past. After the tour a trip to the lavish Tang Dynasty show including dinner and transfers.

Day 4 - Xian to Beijing (to start Day 1 of the Tsars Gold program)

After an early breakfast check out of your hotel. A guide and driver will transfer you to the bullet train station for the 5 hour 300km / hour 21st century journey to Beijing through an ancient rural landscape. Arrival in Beijing with a transfer to your hotel to commence the Tsars Gold Trans-Siberian itinerary with the rest of the group.

Tsars Gold St Petersburg Post-Tour Itinerary

We highly recommend adding in St Petersburg at the end of this Tsars Gold trip. Below is our recommended option but we can tailor this St Petersburg section for you as well as it is usually runs as a private tour rather than a group option. It can be added in to any of the Tsars Gold trips finishing in Moscow.

Day 1 - Moscow to St Petersburg

After the final city tour in Moscow a transfer to the train station. Travel comfortably by high speed Sapsan train to the beautiful city of St Petersburg reached in just 4 hours. Transfer on arrival to your hotel, dinner and free time for the rest of the day.

Day 2 - St Petersburg

St Petersburg’s countless canals, palaces and churches make the city a cultural work of art. Today’s fascinating tour takes you to the main attractions including the former Tsar’s residence, the Winter Palace, which houses the Hermitage, one of the world’s largest art museums. The Alexander Column which commemorates the victory over Napoleon is located in the square next to the museum. The Admiralty and the famous avenue Nevsky Prospect are also on your program. In the evening free time for a leisurely stroll, theater visit, or boat ride on the Neva River.

Day 3 - St Petersburg

This morning visit the former residence of the Czar Pavel I, Pavlovsk Palace, 28 km from the city. Walk through the beautiful park to the palace designed by Charles Cameron from 1782 to 1786. See the amazing collection of original objects owned by the Tsars. In the afternoon visit Puskin and Tsarskoe Selo, 25 km south of St Petersburg. The focus here is the Catherine Palace, the former summer residence of the Tsars. The most famous room is the legendary Amber Room.

Day 4 - Depart St Petersburg

For your final morning visit the Peter and Paul Fortress and Peter and Paul Cathedral, the burial place of the Romanov dynasty. Here visit the tombs of almost all the Empresses and Tsars. After the tour a transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
