Day 1 - Arrival Moscow

You will be welcomed at the airport or train station and transferred to your comfortable hotel. Time to settle in before a fabulous “Moscow by Night” city lights tour seeing some of the most iconic building lit in all their glory. After you have time to stroll through the famous Red Square with your guide and will experience the splendour of Moscow’s unique metro stations, as much art museums as public transport.

Day 2 - Moscow

Today a city tour covering the most famous Moscow sights including the imposing Kremlin complex and one of its magnificent cathedrals dating back to the time of the Tsars. In the evening you will be transferred to your train for the first section of your epic rail journey overnight to Kazan.

Day 3 - Kazan

After breakfast in the dining car we arrive in Kazan, capital of Tatarstan province on the banks of the mighty Volga river. The city is full of history and the tour here will bring to life the once turbulent relationship between Tartars, Cossacks, and Russians. Return to your train for dinner and the overnight journey on to Ekaterinburg.

Day 4 - Ekaterinburg

Morning on the train before an afternoon arrival in Ekaterinburg. Much of this prosperous city was renovated in 2009 and our tour will visit the newly built Cathedral-on-the-blood, built in memorial to the tragic historical event of the nuder of the Tsars and his family. On departing Ekaterinburg we leave Europe and enter Asia and the vast area of Western Siberia.

Day 5 - Novosibirsk

Today we reach the city of Novosibirsk in the heart of Siberia where you will be welcomed in the traditional Russian manner with bread and salt. We visit a monument to the Trans-Siberian and see the mighty Ob River. After dinner the train continues it’s journey Eastwards into remote lands.

Day 6 - Train Across Siberia

A full day on the train through Siberia and crossing the vast Yenisey River that flows up into the arctic. The landscape is of pristine rivers, endless birch and pine forest and distant mountains. On the train there will be lectures about this fascinating and remote land. There will also be a special meal today we call the “Tsar’s Feast” and enjoy Russian hospitality with vodka and caviar tasting.

Day 7 - Irkutsk

Today we reach the city of Irkutsk, once described as the “Paris of Siberia” and you will see evidence of that on our city tour seeing some of the beautiful wooden architecture and impressive river front’s statue of Alexander III. We also visit the lively market. After lunch the tour continues with a visit to the open-air museum “Life and Work in the Time of the Tsars”. Tonight is spent in a centrally located hotel in Irkutsk.

Day 8 - Lake Baikal

Today a tour by bus out of Irkutsk to a Siberian village on the shore of Lake Baikal. We will take a boat ride from here to Port Baikal where a your train awaits. From here we travel the old route of the Trans-Siberian along the shores of Baikal for several hours with a couple of stops to take photos. Dinner is served in typical local style as a picnic on the shores of the lake (weather permitting).

Day 9 - Ulan Ude

We continue by train today along the shores of Baikal and though the Selenga valley into the beautiful and wild Eastern Siberia. On the way we stop at Ulan Ude, capital of Buryatia and a city where Western and Eastern cultures meet. Continue on by train to the Mongolian border.

Day 10 - Mongolia

During the night we cross the border arriving this morning in Mongolia’s capital of Ulaanbaatar. We visit the impressive Buddhist monastery of Gandan and the Lama Museum. Optional Mongolia folk concert (tickets to be bought and paid for locally) before spending the night in a centrally located hotel. If you prefer we can book in advance to stay in a traditional Mongolian ger (must be booked in advance and please contact us for details).

Day 11 - Mongolia

Today we visit the open steppe, mountains and grasslands outside of Ulaanbaatar. We visit a typical ger camp, home to the nomadic herdsmen that are still very much part of Mongolian culture. The herdsmen will give a display of their horseback skills. Return to your train in the evening for the journey onward to the Chinese border.

Day 12 - Through the Gobi into China

Travel though the Gobi Desert before reaching the Chinese border late morning.

*IMPORTANT* At the border you will need to change trains as the Chinese have a different track gauge to Russia and Mongolia. Note that the Chinese train has no Nostalgic Comfort and Bolshoi cabins – only two or 4 bed cabins. Single occupancy is not guaranteed. You will reach China’s capital Beijing in about 16 hours.

Day 13 - Arrival Beijing

The journey though China this morning gives a unique insight into the rural life of China before your arrival in Beijing where you spend the next three nights in a comfortable hotel. Free time for the rest of the day and own arrangements for dinner.

Day 14 - Beijing

Today you will see some of the highlights of Beijing including the Temple of Heaven and it’s beautiful park full of local Beijingers as well as Tiananmen Square and the extraordinary former home of the Emperors of China, the Forbidden City. Own dinner arrangements in the evening.

Day 15 - Beijing & The Great Wall

Today we head out of the city to the mountains that contain the Great Wall. We also visit the Ming Tombs and the avenue of the spirits. Return to the city for the quintessential evening meal of Peking Duck!

Day 16 - Depart Beijing

Sadly, today marks the end of a trip filled with unique and unforgettable experiences. You will be transferred to the airport for your onward journey home. Alternatively, we can arrange to extend your trip further into China with a private tour on to Xian and Shanghai or further destinations in this vast country. Please just ask us for options.

The minimum number of participants required for a trip to run is 120.

We regret that due to the intricate logistics of this tour, itinerary changes are sometimes unavoidable.

On booking a non-refundable deposit of 20% of the total tour price plus any international flights we are booking for you. Full payment is required 90 days before the trip start date.

International flights, tips, beverages, visa fees and any services not mentioned are not included in the price.

Tsars Gold Cancellation conditions:

  • Up to 90 days prior to departure: 20 % of total price
  • Up to 42 days prior to departure: 50% of total price
  • Up to 1 day prior to departure: 90% of total price

Any part of the program that is missed because of late arrival is non-refundable.

Tsars Gold St Petersburg Pre-Tour Itinerary

We highly recommend adding in St Petersburg before starting your Tsars Gold trip. Below is our recommended option but we can tailor this St Petersburg section for you as well as it is usually runs as a private tour rather than a group option. It can be added in to any of the Tsars Gold trips starting in Moscow.

Day 1 - Arrival St Petersburg

Arrival in St Petersburg with a transfer to your hotel and time to settle in and freshen up before dinner.

Day 2 - St Petersburg

St Petersburg’s countless canals, palaces and churches make the city a cultural work of art. Today’s fascinating tour takes you to the main attractions including the former Tsar’s residence, the Winter Palace, which houses the Hermitage, one of the world’s largest art museums. The Alexander Column which commemorates the victory over Napoleon is located in the square next to the museum. The Admiralty and the famous avenue Nevsky Prospect are also on your program. In the evening free time for a leisurely stroll, theater visit, or boat ride on the Neva River.

Day 3 - St Petersburg

This morning visit the former residence of the Czar Pavel I, Pavlovsk Palace, 28 km from the city. Walk through the beautiful park to the palace designed by Charles Cameron from 1782 to 1786. See the amazing collection of original objects owned by the Tsars. In the afternoon visit Puskin and Tsarskoe Selo, 25 km south of St Petersburg. The focus here is the Catherine Palace, the former summer residence of the Tsars. The most famous room is the legendary Amber Room.

Day 4 - St Petersburg to Moscow (Day 1 of the Tsars Gold program)

This morning visit the Peter and Paul Fortress and Peter and Paul Cathedral, the burial place of the Romanov dynasty. Here visit the tombs of almost all the Empresses and Tsars. After the tour a transfer to the station for the high speed Sapsan train to Moscow. On arrival in Moscow you will be transferred to your hotel as per day 1 of the Tsars Gold itinerary.

Day 1 - Beijing to Xian

After a leisurely breakfast check out of your hotel. A guide and driver will transfer you to the bullet train station for the 5 hour 300km / hour 21st century journey to Xian through an ancient rural landscape. Late afternoon arrival in Xian, China’s Tang Dynasty Capital and start of the ancient silk road. Settle in to your 5* hotel before a trip to the lavish Tang Dynasty show including dinner and transfers.

Day 2 - Xian to Shanghai

Full day private tour of Xian’s highlights starting with the extraordinary ranks of the Terra Cotta Army. Created by China’s first Emperor Qin Shi Huang, work began in 246 BC and at its height it is said that 700,000 people worked on the project. In the afternoon we visit a relic of the Tang Dynasty, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built in 652 AD. Continue on to Xian’s largest construction, the 13.7 km City Walls which are up to 18 meters thick at the base and 12 meters in height. Finish the day with a wander through Xian’s vibrant Muslim quarter, an exotic reminder of the cities trading past. Flight on to Shanghai with a transfer to your hotel on arrival.

Day 3 - Shanghai

After breakfast start a full day private tour of this city’s highlights including the Yuyuan Garden, Fuyou Road Antique Market and Old Shanghai, The Bund, Huangpu River and  a trip up one of Pudong’s Sky Scrapers for a bird’s eye view of the city from the top of one of the stunning skyscrapers that now dominate the skyline. Round off this Shanghai experience that with a visit to the world famous Chinese Acrobats for a show filled with excitement.

Day 4 - Depart Shanghai & China

Free time until a guide and driver transfer you to the airport for your onward transport from Shanghai.
