Tomsk has long been considered the cultural capital of Siberia attracting large numbers of artists, students and intellectuals – in fact today up to 20 percent of the city’s 500,000 population are students. Tomsk is also one of the oldest cities in Siberia, founded in 1604 but somewhat left behind when the Trans-Siberian line was diverted south and away from the city. Perhaps one advantage of this relative isolation is that many of the cities old wooden buildings are still there to be seen even if many are in quite a dilapidated state.
