MONGOLIA TOURS FAQs

HOW LONG can i tour mongolia for?

The popular Trans-Mongolian route passes through Mongolia making this remote country accessible for even a short stopover. However, Mongolian visas are up to 30 days in length making a much more detailed exploration of this remote country possible for those with the time and budget.

when is the best time to travel to mongolia?

The summer months from mid-May to mid-September constitute the tourist season. Outside of this time it is cold. The most popular time if July, and particularly for the Naadam Festival (see below) that runs from the 11th to 14th July each year. For the brave a night on the frozen Steppe in a cosy ger in winter is unforgettable.

WhY SPEND LONGER IN MONGOLIA?

Mongolia is one of the world’s truly unique holiday destinations and a very popular stop on many Trans-Siberian tours. Sandwiched in between the giants of Russia and China it is a land of desert, mountain and steppe which has managed to maintain its own unique culture as well as make a huge mark on history through the exploits of Genghis Khan.

There is much to see and do and if on a Trans-Mongolian trip the time consuming and expensive bit of getting to this remote country is already taken care of.

WHAT are the top destinations to visit in mongolia?

The best of Mongolia can be found outside of the capital of Ulaanbaatar. For those short on time a quick trip to Terelj is an ideal introduction. However, with a week or more available you can do so much more with a Karakorum Jeep adventure being a fantastic all round tour.

If you like deserts a similar amount of time will allow you to experience the beauty and extreme environment of the South Gobi Desert. A week will also allow for trips up to pristine Lake Khuvsgul in the far north or lush Khentii province, once the home steppe of Genghis Khan. Explore these destinations more fully in the links below.
Karakorum

Karakorum - Trans-Siberian destination - Mongolia - Monastery of Erdene Zuu, Tumen Amgalan, Stone Turtles, Phallic Rock, Great Imperial Map Monument.

Khentii

Khentii Province - Trans-Siberian destination - Mongolia - Chinggis Khan, lush grasslands, Russian forests, Dadal, nomadic way of life, wildlife.

Lake Khuvsgul

Lake Khuvsgul - Trans-Siberian destination - Mongolia - Ger camps, Hike the forests, reindeer herders, fish, winter ice festival.

Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar - Trans-Siberian destination - Mongolia - Gandan Monastery, Sukhbaatar Square, Naadam Festival, Bogd Khan Museum, Zaisan Memorial and more.

East Gobi

The East Gobi Desert is a Trans-Mongolian destination easily accessible from Sainshand, just inside Mongolia. It is more rugged and less visited than the South Gobi.

South Gobi

The South Gobi Desert is usually taken as a week long trip from Ulaanbaatar with most flying in to see the huge dunes and stunning scenery.

Terelj

Terelj National Park is about 1 hours drive from Ulaanbaatar and the most popular place to experience the Mongolian steppe and some fine scenery.

Hustai

Hustai National Park is famous for the wild Pzrewalski horses that are native to here and have been re-introduced and protected in the park since 2003.
