Once thought to be the greatest city on earth, Xian is the resting place of China’s first Emperor Qin Shi Huang and his Terra Cotta Army. This was also the start and end point of the the world’s first foray into globalization, the Silk Road, signs of which can be seen in it’s thriving Muslim quarter Add to this it being the capital of Tang Dynasty China, a golden epoch of arts and culture in Chinese history and you start to realise the global significance of this city in history and it’s a must in any trip to China.

Almost any trip of more than a few days in China will visit Xian and not just for the Terra Cotta Army as there are plenty of sights including the 14 km long City walls and nearby Mount Huashan.
XIAN TRAVEL TIP
One of China’s best overnight train services runs from Beijing to Xian and is a cost effective and time efficient way of getting between the two cities. In addition to Beijing, Shanghai is usually visited alongside Xian.
