The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts has a superb collection of foreign art from the ancient through to the modern era. Construction began in 1951 and on completion the Department for National Security of the USSR took responsibility for the bunker from where 2500 workers provided round-the-clock communication for the leaders of the state in case of nuclear attack. In the 1960’s Taganskiy was fully equipped as a nuclear bunker and could sustain 5000 people for several months without need of resupply.
